What It Means To Be A Teacher

Teachers much hated by most students. But why? Very few teachers are liked or even respected by students. There can be many reasons why...... Depends very much on how a teacher brings himself about can be the ultimate reason why most teachers are disliked or not respected by students. To some extend it can also be the natural charism and charm of the individual teacher that becomes the nature of attraction. Some teachers are so kind yet are not liked by students while some are so inhumane but surprisingly much liked by students. What is the yardstick for the students like or dislike for a certain teacher? One very common and much visible gesture is how many gifts a teacher gets from his students on teachers day. But can this really be a genuine act of like or can it also be a mean to show how much actually the students want to tell their teacher to be kind to them. In other words the students want to say "Teacher I want to be your friend so please befriend me". If that is so then actually this is the beginning of a bribery act. To give this inhumane teachers gifts just because the students want to be given a favour in return. If that is so then ..............
So what does it mean to be a teacher? Teachers are replacement for parents during the time in which children are away from their parents. So a teacher should treat the students as much he would treat his own children. If they do wrong they should be punished and if they do good deeds they should be appreciated. Love them as much as they would love their own children.Surely when they are irritating so much as their own children the teacher will scream cos at home the teacher also scream when they get annoyed with their own children.
Bringing up children needs application of some psychological approach. Teachers are to guide and not imprison these growing up children. The approach towards children at different ages are different. Very young children in standard 1 to standard 3 may need more of the loving approach. Students in Standard 4 until form 1 more of threatening approach may be effective and that is why the threatening approach of counting 1,2,3 ... may be effective. But try the threatening approach of counting with the form 2 ,3 and 4 then don't be surprise if a teacher will hear the students continuing counting 4,5,6...... and so on. Surely a teacher with little knowledge or experience will get heated up and marked the students as rude, disrespectful and the sort. But actually students at this age may need more actions than words meaning if the students do wrong, there should be no threatening but actions have to be taken. If at this age only threats are given, the students are already wise enough to access how far a teacher really mean his words. At this age of standard 4 until form one is a period of crucial upbringing. At this point they are going to establish their own values. This is the time of shaping up a real human. This is the time of building their colours. When they are in form two until form four is the time for then to practice their beliefs. If they have shape themselves in contra with the local normal norms the teachers will have a hard time reshaping them. Reshaping may need a lot of patience and compromise. Too harsh on them may result in their retaliation and may cause more distortion. At this point a little bit of compromise may be better. There are times when a teacher have to close one eye and let the students themselves put things right after guidance is given. A little bit of room for freedom be given so that they can have their own self-assessment and finally make a good decision. By doing so the students will turn out to an individual who is able to think, make decision and hopefully a good leader in the future.
At the age when they are in form five and six or pre-u they will finally come to their senses and able to be independent individuals who can contribute to the school society.
If a student grows up to become an individual who can contribute positively to the society then a teachers job is successfully done. On the contrary if a student fail to contribute positively to the society then a teacher has failed his job. It would be the same as a doctor whose patient died on his operation table or a lawyer who failed to save his client. The difference is a doctor has only one chance either do or die, a lawyer has a few chances to appeal to court but a teacher only knows that he fail his job only after ten or twelve years. What a tragedy...................
