Teaching:Your Profession or your Career...

Teaching.....
your profession or your career..
is there a difference between profession and a career..
personally..
all this while i have never thought of teaching as my career or my profession..
maybe i take too much for granted..
i always thought career is your profession..
until i came across an incident which gave me a thought..
hei.. there is a difference between a career and a profession..
and maybe because i have never thought teaching as my career
i seem to take it as my profession...

So what is the difference between a career and a profession..
A career...
when one take teaching as a career then
one would do his best to move forward..
as time goes on ..he would progress..
climbing up the stairs and in due time reaching the top
rankingwise...
it sounds good isn't it..
maybe starting as a non graduate teacher..
he would improve himself by studying and soon become a graduate teacher..
fine.. cos thats what it should be like..
life long education and ever improving..
he would work very hard and maybe with full commitment..
so that he will have a good reputation and good assessment at the end of the year..
working hard so as to get a reward in return..
maybe at the end of the day..
then get promoted step by step..
starting as a senior assistant ..
then on and on until the end become a principal..
gradewise maybe first start as a lowest grade DG29
until finally end up with DG52 or 54...
In the process of going up the steps..
definitely a lot of calculation be done and strategies set..
all calculations and strategies set to his benefit...
for every work done or commitment given..
how can that benefit him...
so in a way everything done with a certain goal ..
the goal set as an ejecting force..
to be seen and heard..
SO IN A WAY WHEN ONE TAKE TEACHING AS A CAREER ONE WILL ALWAYS PUT ONESELF TO BE THE CENTRE OR IN OTHER WORDS SELF CENTERED..
the question constantly asked will be ..
how does this benefit me..
one will manipulate every success to one's benefit..
reading every students success as his success..
so when planning a program or project..
how does it accelerate his graph..
everything done for that purpose..

On the other hand when one take teaching as a profession..
then definitely it would be the opposite
it will be more student centered..
when planning a program or project then the main objective will be
how would that benefit the students..
teachers work for the students..
without thinking what benefits would he get..
he would be satisfied after doing wwhat he is suppose to do..
he does his work because that is what is wanted of him..
for the sake of the students..
is sounds ideal..isn't it..
is there such a teacher....
many are actually teachers who are career as well as profession teachers..
nonetheless there are some who are more prompt to be career teachers..

Let me give one situation..
teaching your students painting...
Response 1:
if you ask yourself back by asking these questions..
"how does painting benefit my students..
who is going to buy these students' painting...
then you give your answer as...
well painting is just fun for them..
it is what they like to do..

Response 2:
if you ask yourself...
i give them to do painting..
it is something they like to do..
they are having fun..
but at the same time painting is a hidden talent..
who knows you will be able to detect some one with that talent..
you teach them the skills of painting..
and you tell your students ..
one day when you grow up you can take up painting as your career..

According to my definition:
Response 1 is career teacher and response 2 is a profession teacher
(Note: profession ..NOT... professional. Refer to the topic Teaching your career or profession)

Why...
Response 1 finds out that by doing painting there is nothing that they can gain other than just having fun and doing what they like to do. So that nothing gain means it does not become an accelerating factor to the teacher's graph. So he would let them be..Just imagine if the student can become a popular artist while under the care of this teacher..definitely it becomes a boost to the teacher and his graph.. then it would be a different scene all together.

Why does response 2 is a profession teacher according to my definition..
The students are having fun and doing what they like to do..
THEN ONE DAY IN THE FUTURE THE STUDENT CAN TAKE UP PAINTING AS HIS CAREER..
by that time nobody knows who was the one who detected the hidden talent..
the teachers contribution in the forming of a good artist is unknown..
the teacher does not care much if his graph is boosted or not..
for what he cares the student's talent is detected, polished and at the end of the day, the students talent is utilised for his benefit..
That is what teachers are actually for...
